Returning to bass playing after a long layoff, I find this book interesting, up to date, and very helpful rebuilding my skills. I'd recommend this book to a beginner in an instant. There is no CD in this book, all recorded material is online. You can choose to download the recorded material, but I have to mention the online player is terrific, with A-B repeat, speed and pitch adjustments! I've found myself simply logging in and using the online player instead of downloading all the content. I also like the spiral binding, all music books should be bound this way. I'm using this book in parallel with Friedland's Blues Bass book. The two pair well together.

If you are a Kindle, Android or PC Cloud user DO NOT get the KIndle addition!!!! I feel as though I have been conned by Amazon on this book. No where do they reveal that the audio will only work on Apple products.As for the book itself I have used Hal Leonard books for several instruments and find them well written and extremely helpful. The accompanying audio is one of the biggest assets. T So while I love the book (5 stars) I am extremely annoyed at Amazon for devaluing the experience by more than half. If I could give a rating to Amazon on this eBook experience it would be zero stars.

I bought this book because Mel Bay's Deluxe Jazz & Rock Bass Method was such a turn off for me. Mel Bay's exercises were intentionally not melodic, and the technique Mel Bay recommends (One Fret Per Finger) is painful for my hands -- I had to pivot in order to do it at all, and Mel Bay told me not to do that! This Hal Leonard book is miles better -- each of the exercises is fun! And in every way their technique suggestions directly address the problems I actually had. And I'm glad I got the 3-volume set...the first volume, I more or less got down in about a month (I have a lot of experience with non-guitar instruments), but the second volume is still giving me loads of challenge. I can tell it will be months before I am ready to even look at the third volume, and even after I've "mastered" (hah, right) all of the material, the exercises will be fun for a lifetime. And one other thing I loved is how easy it was to download all of the exercises as one big .ZIP file from the website. For me, I could use the MP3 players I already know and love, and that is a big deal to me. I was worried there would be some sort of DRM nightmare, and it was the exact opposite.

I’ve played bass casually for close to 15 years and professionally for the last two - in this time I’ve learned a lot of songs and hardly anything about theory. I’ve tried other books that used bass clef and tabs. While this seems convenient, I found it impossible to ween myself off of tab. This book has no tab and eases you right in. I received the book about two and a half hours ago and for the first time in my career I’m looking at a bass clef and knowing which notes I’m supposed to play. I look forward to the rest of what this book has to offer. So far it’s very user friendly and has helpful mnemonics that have been missing from my compendium of bass knowledge for years. I highly recommend for a beginner, or for someone like me who knows a lot of songs and plays a lot but can’t read or understand the theory.

Glad I found this book. At first glance it looks like it's a simple book to go through but if you are seriously studying the bass or any other instruments in their series line of books you'll find it pretty much covers it all but you as I have found have to pay attention to what all they are saying in each lesson and apply one lesson to the next. Make sure that you go over the fine print or you'll miss something that they are trying to get across. You only get out of it what you put into it. I can see why some of the other reviews say it's used as a text. It teaches music theory as well as the instrument. It does such a good job that I found a couple of mistakes and not sure if it was on purpose or not. It is well worth your time. It starts notes on the E string and not the G which for some reason makes complete sense. Another thing that I find useful is if you want to expand on a particular topic lesson for the most part they have other books to help you expand or at least know enough to research it on the internet. One thing I suggest is you get a metronome, it will make playing and CD's that are provided closer in sound with one another quicker and less painful.

I update my instructional material from time to time as it is essential to stay current with methods and media. This electric bass compilation helps and is one I recommend to my students. A typical range of students includes (for example) 10 year old beginning guitarists, a few teen guitarists who have been playing a while to a few beginning bassists, and some crossover bassists from piano & guitar. I choose this method for the bassists as good standard from which to start and to bring the student through 3 levels of musicianship.But this method is not all I employ in the course of instruction. I also work the students out on dexterity exercises which include: Symmetrical and Chromatic exercises. Liner scalar sequences, positional scalar sequences, arpeggios, legato techniques, thumbs, pops etc...This series provides a measurable standard of advancement realizing of course that much of the work bringing a student up in technique is done in conjunction with other resources as well. This approach adds to the enjoyment of learning for the student and really pays off when the dexterity kicks in and suddenly things become much easier to accomplish and then the student derives great satisfaction inside the learning process.My goals are to advance the students playing (and jamming) and this series is a wonderful aid in reaching those milestones.Good price too. If you are familiar with instruments/music/strings I guess you could give a go by yourself. I certainly did that decades ago, but back then all we had was Mel Bay and Mary Had a Little Lamb types of instruction available. This is so far beyond that. Ed Friedland has authored a nice package.If could make one more small suggestion it would be to take some drum lessons as well as some piano; you'll be glad you did.
