About the Author

Steven Scalet received his Ph.D in philosophy at the University of Arizona. After receiving his doctorate, he taught at Binghamton University (SUNY) for a decade, where he directed the Program in Philosophy, Politics and Law and was an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Economics. Professor Scalet is the recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Professor Scalet publishes articles in applied ethics and political philosophy, and is currently an Associate Professor of philosophy at the University of Baltimore (USM). John Arthur was a Professor of Philosophy at Binghamton University (SUNY) before his untimely death from non-smokers lung cancer.  He was beloved as a teacher and mentor to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in his nearly twenty years at Binghamton.

This book was good as far as a Philosophy book goes. It was needed for the class I took, so it served its purpose. The reason I only gave it 3 stars was because of the condition the rental was in when I got it. I have never had a bad experience with rentals in the past, but this one not only had writing most of the pages it also had pages that were completely lose and falling out. All the pages were there so I was not missing any information, but it did make it difficult when I would use it as the pages kept falling out. Once I got past the first couple of chapters I actually just took them out and placed them in the box I was planning to return them in once the class was finished. It was annoying when I needed to pull them back out of the box to review when needed, but it did its job all in all.

The description for this book, although correct, stated only that the access code was not guaranteed which I do not need anyway. However, the condition of this book was not described in any detail, but I know why I was able to rent it so cheaply. The binding of this book is taped, there are hot pink post it notes as page tabs, and various degrees of underlining or highlighting, all of which so far is only mildly distracting. So far the book is legible and should serve its purpose.

This was the main text for a college level moral philosophy course, and most of the readings came from this book. It is written very clearly, even as it dives into some very heady and morally complex topics. Everything in this realm of philosophy is given equal weight, and the book itself is quite large: religion, the source of morality, abortion, euthanasia, relativism, just war theory, animal rights, and many more topics are fully covered from a wide range of perspectives. All sides are represented fairly, with the vast majority of the text comprising of source essays from professors and other experts in their respective fields. Highly recommended.

An interesting and educational read for philosophy lovers.

Some chapters that include actual work of philosophers could actually be re-written in a simpler words. Took forever to come to senses about the meaning of the material. Just like The work of Shakespeare, it is good to read the original, but to aid with understanding explanation notes are of great help. This book needs it, especially for chapter 3.

This book was required text for one of my classes. It arrived quickly and it was in new condition, as advertised. This book reads like a school textbook but does contain some interesting information that make you ponder. Great price many other places (including my school) were trying to charge ore for this book, ultimately a good buy.

Annoyed that I have not been able to extend the rental until after finals. I try and it only gives me the option to purchase it for another $65. The book is also hard to follow and difficult to read.

I was really looking forward to this book, but it was a slow boring read. I had to have it for an ethics class, but I found it very hard to get through.
