Pastor Dean has a huge hit on his hands with this book being the best Gospel Centered read of 2019. It took all of a day to read and now on a reread as everyone from across the spectrum should give this book a read. Very well researched and fulfilling from all aspects I believe this will be a bestseller and a Classic from one of the great young influencers of the next generation.
Dean Inserra captures and articulates what so many of us who serve in “Land of the Monogrammed†have observed for years, but struggled to express. Cultural Christianity is a great challenge and an even greater mission field. Pastors need this book!
A book that shows what the “Bible Belt†has done to Christianity and challenges us to think about what the church is actually producing.
Dean’s book gives a distinct call to engage Cultural Christians with the gospel and provides a helpful roadmap on how to do it.
The book does a good job of identifying a valid mission field of unsaved people who are Christians by association only. Admittedly, the author bases his arguments on the Calvinistic doctrine of 'Perseverence of the Saints'. If that's you thing you will enjoy this book.Confusingly, the author uses Matt 7:21-23 to show that there will be some who do acts of righteousness but are not truly saved (pg 16). But then turns around and says it is those types of acts of righteousness that we should look for in our lives to see if we ourselves are truly saved (pg 67, "Jesus gives us a guide for what true conversion looks like." pg 68, "Those who... bear fruit can be assured.."pg 188). But then admits "we cannot know who is saved or not." (same page), but then in the very next sentence goes back to implying we can know, "All we can know are the marks given in Scripture for true, saving faith." (same page). Finally, he reinforces the doctrine of inspecting fruit for true conversion by using Matt 7:17-20. But what he fails to observe is the phrase, " A good tree CANNOT produce bad fruit." Unless the author is willing to say true Christians CANNOT ever produce bad fruit, he is in error. The conclusion of the doctrine from this book is as follows: some of the same righteous acts that are identified for marks of true conversion are also done by those who are not truly saved. Use these righteous acts to test your conversion (But at the same time a truly converted person CANNOT produce bad fruit).2 stars for shining a light on a mission field, but presenting inconsistant conclusions from Perseverence of the Saints and misapplying a passage to support it.
There has been a huge thrust in evangelicalism toward planting churches in hard areas: declining rural populations and difficult cities where there has been little gospel witness. I am excited about these movements. They are needed. But there is another mission field that we must consider: those areas saturated with churches and embedded in civil religion. Nobody has covered this as good as Dean Inserra. This book is a manual for pastoring in the South. It's warm, humorous, challenging, and punchy. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
This book is helpful not just for pastors, but for every believer. Dean Inserra shares insights from navigating relationships with unsaved people who truly believe they are saved. I recently met a new friend with a Catholic background. The chapter on Catholic backgrounds really helped me think through the family and generational culture that might cause her hesitation. You will find yourself asking, “Does my friend, my co-worker, my family member REALLY understand the gospel like they say they do?†This book will inspire intentionality in relationships at the coffee shop, on our walking route, at kids events, wherever we go.
Too many people write books because they have a platform or they want to be personally recognized...this isn’t that. Dean Inserra writes as a pastor who is in a heavily churched context and points the way through religious jargon and cultural Christianity and shows how the gospel actually reaches the lives and communities that need Jesus just as badly as the urban centers of our country. This is a must read for pastors of all ages and experience who want to be equipped to lead well in a world that often thinks it’s Christian but isn’t.
