Surrender.” These are the lessons that Lerita’s “birth heart,” named “Heavy Harvey” leaves her with in this wise and deeply personal memoir.Lerita Coleman Brown was born with an inherited heart defect, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which killed her grandfather and had already required her to have open-heart surgery at the age of 25. The book opens about 5 months before she undergoes a heart transplant at the age of 41, and is written in large part through a series of imagined dialogues with her two hearts.Part One of the book opens with the day that a transplant was first recommended to her by a (forgive the pun—you will hear a lot of them, particularly in the first half of the book!) heartless doctor, who tells her that she will need a transplant in the near future and then spins and walks out the door, and involves the process of “Heavy Harvey” talking with Lerita about the unnecessary pressure she puts on both of them by her competitive striving for excellence—not merely the need to excel, but the felt need to best others—and strong need for control and the negative emotions this approach to life engenders. Through a series of dialogues, Lerita comes to a new perspective on her prior way of being and finally comes to accept the need for a transplant.Part Two of the book opens after the transplant has taken place and involves a second set of dialogues between Lerita and her new heart, “Grace,” during the long process of recovering from the transplant. Grace teaches her how negative emotions have a literal stink, encourages her to focus on love and joy and learning to listen to spirit and her heart’s desire (rather than her “false self” egoistic desire), and ends with a heart-warming romance and Lerita’s learning better how to listen to her feelings as a source of inner guidance.Along the way are a series of Reflection Questions and an Appendix with instructions for instructions for having your own “heart conversations.”Read this book and you will learn not only about the personal foibles of your wise instructor, but perhaps you will be inspired to tune in more to your own “small still voice” within.
