Mira Jacob has really written - and drawn - a memoir for our times. Jacob, the author of a marvelous novel, "The Sleepwalker's Guide to Dancing", published in 2014, has written "Good Talk: A Memoir in Conversations", a graphic work using text, drawings, and photographs to try to distill some of the angst in our society brought on by the election of Donald Trump in 2016. But the angst that Jacob felt for her and her young son actually began years before as the American-born daughter of Indian immigrants to the United States.Jacab's story goes back and forth between 2016 and times before. When we flash between the present and the past, the transitions tend to deal with how Jacob has faced a sense of alienation about her darker-than-blonde-blue-eyed looks. (It's probably good that she grew up in Albuquerque which is a pretty good melting pot. Edina, Minnesota, say, might have been a bit tougher.) Her skin was a bit darker than her parents and older brother, which brought on non-PC comments from her Indian relatives, who emphasised the "value" of lighter skin, particularly in the marriage-game. But Mira grew up a smart kid - despite some incidents - and moved to New York City after college. She met again a young man who'd grown up with her in New Mexico, they married, and had a son. Her husband was Jewish and so, of course, the boy was a combination Jewish and South Asian.Much of the book is devoted to trying to understand her son's fears of the world around him as Donald Trump emerges as first the Republican candidate for President, and then, as the elected president. "Z", her son, sees his paternal grandparents as Trump supporters and worries they won't love him. Jacob and her husband walk the fine line of respecting his parents without respecting their political choices. There was a lot of that in the nervous time of the election and many of us have reevaluated some of our friendships with others, others who may have voted a different way than we did.Mira Jacob's fine book deserves a wide readership. She articulates many of our own worries about the future of our great country. "Good Talk" is indeed "good talk".
This is written in the picture style of comics, but the topics are serious. It may be hard to offer serious “conversation†in comic form, but Mira Jacob pulls it off. She offers insights into her experience as an American of Indian background, jumping around in time from her own childhood and into her own son’s lifetime. To give you a clue as to what Mira Jacob offers, here are the chapter titles:1: 20142: Indians in America3: Spring 20134: Fair & Lovely5: Summer 20156: American Revolution7: Fall 20158: Our Bodies, Ourselves9: Love, American Style10: Winter 201511: Perfect Together12: And Then It Got a Little Weird13: I’m Not Nervous You Are14: American Love15: Welcome to the Big City16: Spring 201617: Love Marriage18: Big City Romance19: Summer 201620: The Neuropsychologist21: I Know You22: Man Secrets, Revealed!23: No Thanks24: Only in New York25: Paper City26: September 201627: Imposter Syndrome28: Marriage29: Our Families Get the News30: Summer on the Television31: Mid-September 201632: The Bark Mitzvah (yes, it really says Bark)33: A More Perfect Union34: Late September 201635: Early October 201636: Mid-October 201637: Book Business38: October 31, 201639: How It Happened40: November 8, 201641: December 201642: March 201743: The Talk We Haven’t HadBut that’s JustMe.
I enjoy graphic novel style memoir, nonfiction, and fiction so I ordered this, it is a unique style of illustration with the background image a photograph and then a cutout hand drawn person with talk bubbles. This is a memoir that jumps back and forth in time and tells the stories all in dialogue. As a mother of two sons I really enjoyed the deep conversations Jacob has with her son as he grows and tries to figure out the world and how people operate within our society. I learned some things about Indian culture. Some topics addressed: Indian arrange marriage vs. American marriage for love, Mira's parents immigrated from India to the USA, her father was a cardiovascular surgeon, she is American born. I learned that Indians judge each other by the lightness or darkness of their skin, Mira has darker skin than her family, and some in her family and other Indians had negative judgements and classifications for her. Jacob wanted love relationships not an arranged marriage and while in college and single also was relationships with other women. She marries a Jewish man so issues of interracial marriage are in this memoir as well.Jacob was living in NYC on 9/11 and her experience is in the story. Some rude things have been done to her by Americans who assumed she was not American, that she did not speak English, or that she was a Muslim (affiliated with a terrorist) which makes Jacob feel a divide between brown + black people and white Americans. The election of President Obama was celebrated as she identified with him as a person of color and was hopeful for his message promising change. There was tension regarding the campaign and election of President Trump, her Jewish in-laws were supporters which caused family strife, but she and her husband feel Trump is a racist and that her and her son's physical safety is at risk as Americans living in America during a Trump presidency.Frustration with whites, even at the end, a liberal, educated Boston NPR employee does not get it about an Indian from India who lived in New Mexico versus a Native American as from his perspective the only Indians that are in New Mexico are Native Americans. This underscored for me that even educated liberal whites cannot always do the right or best thing.I enjoy memoir as it helps me understand other's life experiences and how they think and live and how they perceive the world in that time. When I am living in the same place at the same time, how people can perceive issues so differently is of interest to me. I loved the illustration and the honest storytelling from the heart. I can appreciate the story of others even when it's not my story and I can enjoy a book even when I don't agree with every viewpoint or cannot see the logic in an argument I enjoyed the personal stories of growing up and relationships and mothering challenges more than the anti-Trump rants. Rating 4 stars = Like It.
