as usual, there are some surprises, but more or less a predictable outcome. If you've read the 1st trilogy and the 1st book in this 2nd trilogy, then you'll probably not be disappointed with this. It isn't great, and so far I've liked book 2 & 3 of 1st trilogy the best. The characters are not quite believable, a bit too two dimensional, but ok. Things I find annoying: I don't like repeated "just in the nick of time" plot devices. I mean, it just isn't plausible that there's going to be a series of one-in-a-million coincidences to save the bacon. I don't like his cycles (after 5 books, I've still not figured out how to convert them to days, hrs, min, etc.) wouldn't you expect a translator to translate those units of time into units of time we use here? I do. He blundered in assuming there's something fundamental about a second (or a light-second). Alien ships should have zero reason to stop at "exactly" one-light second from something. Nor should a spaceship **ever** be described as coming to a stop or being motionless. Current research concludes that about 6% of the adult population is homosexual or bisexual. And yet this author, like many current ones, seems to think this allows for a plausible gallery of (human) characters to be composed of 30%,40%, or 50% non-heterosexuals. It doesn't. The story of a boring "romantic" relationship doesn't magically become interesting if the characters are not hetero. Morgan and her (new)"love" act like they're in high school until suddenly and inexplicably they have a profound connection. I think my reaction will be pretty common: "where'd THAT come from?!" The major flaw, I think, in this book is that the enemy targets Earth first. I was also a bit disappointed that there were no new aliens - the diversity of life-forms has been a strength for these.

I recieved an advanced reader copy. Stewart continues the events started in Darkness Beyond. However, the stakes are higher for Duchess Bond. The threat to Terra has become more dire.Stewart's ability to spin a tale continues to astound me. His characters are multifaceted and you have to pay attention to their motivations as much as their actions. I strongly suggest reading the prequel trilogy starting with The Terran Privateer to get a full background. However this novel can stand on it's own. Glynn Stewart needs to get started on book 3 for this trilogy! Can't wait.

I always look forward to a new Glynn Stewart book! The worlds and scenarios he creates play through my daydreams long after I have read his books, any time I'm looking to escape or turn my mind to wonder.As with so many of Glynn Stewart's stories there is wonder and tension and struggle and fear and loss. The are captivating reads that make my feel like a slightly improved person for having read them. As per usual I knocked this one out in a single weekend of aggressive reading. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!I was given a free digital copy for review in exchange for my honest review of this book. Then I purchased this book within minutes of learning that it was finally available.

Glynn Stewart does it again. The storyline implies that this is the second book of a trilogy (could be more). The great thing is that this doesn't feel like the middle of a trilogy, it was a good story all on it's own.I like the characters, there aren't any new faces but those that are featured all seem to grow a bit or reveal a little more depth. Even the hated Kanzi turn out to not be so entirely despicable. That was a really nice turn to the story arc.The action is really well paced. The battle sequences are detailed enough to be interesting but short enough to keep the larger story moving. The final battle at the end has an unexpected twist that wrapped things up nicely. Can't wait until the next installment!

All of our favorites are here with much battle both near and far. Morgan is the lead in this chapter and gives us the dawning of the next generation rising up to take their place in Earths defence. We lose some of our well known characters but get some new ones. Wished this one went a little longer but can't wait until the next installment gets here. Highly recommended .

Mr Stewart has done it again! This the 5th in the Duchy of Terra series is a riveting, suspenseful read. Humanity goes looking for the enemy and finds more than they bargained for. There will be loses along the way. Lost 4 hours of sleep over this book! Great read!

Wow. Promised myself I would live this book for the weekend. That was earlier today, and several hours later, after I couldn’t put it down I’m giving a five star review.If you’ve read the earlier books in the series or other works by Glynn Stewart, you will not be dissolved. If you haven’t, well don’t wait, you’re missing on one of the best sci-fi writers I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.

The “Duchy of Terra” series of books has quickly made it’s way to my top three series of books, nestled in with it’s esteemed comrades “The Lost Fleet”, and “Man of War” series. They are all fantastic, but with Shield of Terra, the Duchy series may have pulled ahead of the Lost Fleet in my estimation. The character development was good, the action thrilling, and the loses deeply felt.
