I am a piano teacher and I grew up playing the Alfred series. When I started teaching, I used the Alfred series. As I expanded my knowledge of resources out there, I came across this book. In comparison to the Alfred Level 1A book, this one works much better for young beginners. The introduction of notes on the staff is gradual and gives students a chance to absorb 1-3 notes at a time before introducing others (the Alfred book shows all 5 notes in C Position at once and only gives you 1 song for each hand before students are expected to read the grand staff with 5 notes on each staff. For many young beginners, this is overwhelming and they end up struggling with note reading). This book also emphasizes the difference between steps and skips - while you come across a couple 5ths here and there, they are not formally labeled as 5ths. This allows students the chance to get comfortable understanding the staff and the difference between steps and skips before overwhelming them with intervals galore. The first half(ish) of the book is all pre-reading - no staff, just lettered notes and rhythms. I love having the option to use all these pages for younger beginners who need more time to understand the connections between rhythm, the letters of the keys, and their hands. However, for fast learners or some 8-9 year old beginners, we skip some of these songs.Lastly, there are many teacher duets in this book, which are great for (1) spicing up some otherwise bland songs (what can you expect when you only know 2 notes?), (2) helping kids develop their sense of rhythm (we have to count together to stay together!), and (3) allowing beginners to have fun. Almost all my students love playing duets. My students do better when they start with this book rather than the Alfred 1A book. If you have an older beginner, or one with some experience reading music, this book will probably be too easy for them and they'll race right through. But for beginning kids 8-9 and younger, this works like a charm.
I LOVE the Piano Adventures series, especially for my beginner students. The focus is on note reading rather than traditional "5-finger position" learning, which makes for more confident music reading and a much smoother transition to more advanced pieces. The pieces are fun for the students to play, and the book progresses at a good pace so students don't feel "stuck" on a topic, nor overwhelmed with too much new information. By far my favorite series of method books.
I am totally happy with these Faber piano books! I am a violinist and also grew up taking piano lessons through college, and now that I am a mom of 4 young kids I was looking for a good contemporary piano method to use with them. This is it. It goes simply step by step without being too babyish. My 8 year old already has some music basics down, so she has progressed quickly through the Primer level. My 6 year old is going a bit more methodically through the lessons, which is perfect for his age. I am completely satisfied with the Primer book and will continue on through the series! When purchasing the, it was a little unclear to me whether all students should begin with the Primer or if older students should begin with the Advanced beginner book. Unless the student already has a very good knowledge of the grand staff and most music concepts such as dynamics and tempo, I would always begin with the Primer level book. It's not babyish at all. This is not a book of Mary Had A Little Lamb, Twinkle, and Lightly Row. The pieces are original and well-conceptualized.
Great book for beginning piano students who are younger, around 5 or 6. I purchased this for my 10-year old daughter and she went through the book really quickly and she's only been in piano classes for a month. It came highly recommended from her piano teacher because she had never taken music before, but if you have a child who has some basic music knowledge you may want to start with another book.
My favorite book for teaching absolute beginners. Definitely marketed towards younger children, if you're starting with a tween/teen/young adult I would recommend the older beginners books in the same series. This one has lots of little cartoons etc in it which may turn off some older players. I'm a big fan of the way this method is laid out and it sets the child up for good technique and reading skills.
Love this series. However, ordering straight from the publisher is just as affordable and they also started doing "packages" with several books and bonus books and I really like that!
I have used this book with about seven of my students so far, and I LOVE IT! I use it in conjunction with the theory book (I do not use the technique and artistry book or the performance book but they are available) and I really like how the things they learn in the music is what they are also learning in their theory book. I try to reinforce even further during the lesson with a game, and they almost always remember what we've learned. The way they introduce a single note at a time is really great for young learners, and it gives them time to remember and digest that note before learning something new. My younger students a lot of times remember note names better than my older students! The other great thing about this book, though, is that while they learn and use finger numbers to find hand positions and occasionally guide them throughout the song, they really are reading by note name as well as steps and skips (2nd and 3rd intervals) rather than just reading finger numbers.I also love that this book teaches steps and skips and focuses on it just as much as note name. It gives my students two dynamics to learn a song by, and together they make a really strong playing student. This book starts by teaching finger numbers and pre-reading songs off the staff, and then slowly transitions to the staff one note at a time, so I have only used it with younger students (Kindergarten-3rd grade). But if you have an older student with a handicap or who prefers to learn more slowly, I would definitely recommend this book. My students come away with an in-depth knowledge of everything they have learned. I couldn't be happier with this book!
