This is a good book, period. If you are an E30 enthusiast, this puts a lot of the tips/upgrades/update/backdate stuff we talk about and debate in excellent perspective. If you are an expert, you were probably consulted, or are referenced in the book. Very nice to see products and set-ups from many aftermarket preparers and suppliers in the book! Not a repair manual, and doesn't pretend to be - that is what the essential Bentley manual is for. But for getting a good perspective on increasing performance, addressing weak points and weighing the benefit vs. compromise and cost of modifications it does a great job. I thought the analysis and recommendations for improvement of suspension, shift linkage and steering were particularly valuable, as was the reality of the effectiveness of different bolt-on engine components. Comparative reviews here like you wish you got in those multi-part magazine articles (that seem to fall way short). Especially with the very reasonable price, this is a must have if your E30 is more to you than something that gets you from point A to point B. To the author: expand the (obviously coming) second edition with production data, and more of the common fixes that need attention - more of a good thing!

If interested in BMW E30 series it is worthwhile adding to any collection on that series BMW. I admit however, that most of the information it contained I had already gleaned from other books on the series.

If you have, or are considering, an E30 and want to maximize performance, this book is a must buy. The lessons are timeless and the information is beyond helpful. I often prefer forums over books when it comes to cars, but this is an exception. The time savings is well worth the minimal cost. Buy it now!

First I'd like to say that I'm glad this book exists and I'm glad there's E30 focused books. It has big beautiful full color photos of great E30s and good picts of E30 innards and parts. Perhaps the most valuable part of the book is the few "owner-focus" pages that list the actual parts that were used on the cars in the photograph so the reader can get an idea of what works well together. This books value is wholly in it's pictures. I'm not happy that this book is long on filler, has very few useful facts, and contains zero insight. It isn't until Chapter 3, nearly one-third of the way through the book, that the "performance guide" portion of the book begins. I repeatedly got the sense that much of the book was written using a "find-and-replace" command from a different auto performance book. Lot's of general discussion about the hazards of lowering the car too far, the differences between a owning a race car and a street car, pay attention to local regs, handling terms, etc. The first words on the book's cover is "performance how-to" yet the book contains almost zero, "how-to" information and what little it does contain is completely irrelevant to performance (e.g. timing belt change, door lock repair). After using the Porsche 911 Performance Handbook by Bruce Anderson, I know how good an automotive performance book can be. The E30 deserves better.

I found my answers quickly and have set a plan to resto modding my E30 thanks to this book. Pretty easy read and a few good pointers.

If you're looking to buy a E30 BMW, this is a great book to get you started. Inexpensive and a great section on buying a E30. Then many of the performance upgrades you might want to make to your car.
